You can always write.
That sounds like freedom, doesn’t it?
Now let’s take it a step further. Remove the word can.
You always write.
Strange at first, maybe, but let it settle. It only sounds strange because we’ve been taught to narrow the definition of writing. To think of it as something that happens with a pen, or a keyboard, or a deadline. But that’s just the part we notice. The visible part.
Writing begins before the words appear.
It begins in how you see things. In how you move through your day.
It happens while you walk, while you pause, while you forget what you were doing and let your mind drift. Sometimes you sit down to write, and nothing shows up. But that doesn’t mean nothing’s happening.
The writing isn’t gone. It’s just unfolding differently.
Maybe you’re collecting pieces. Maybe the words are forming quietly, beneath the surface. Maybe this is the part where you live, and later you’ll realize it was all part of the process.
You don’t need to force it. You don’t even need to name it.
It’s already happening. And it always has been.
I find your substack so relieving and so true! Any time I think there is some way I ‘should’ write I end up laughing at myself. This is just not the way writing- or pretty much anything-happens. I avoid writing advice and my posts seem to come out of nowhere when they come. I appreciate your clear understanding of this!🙏🏼
Yes! 😃
