Uh Oh... WordSpill Has Moved House
From the (un)writing room to the (un)marketing space through the back door.
Don't do it, Youri. Please, don't...
Too late.
This Substack is about to transform. Like a caterpillar emerging from its cocoon as a butterfly.
The name stays the same: WordSpill. The essence remains unchanged too, which is getting out of your own way. But the focus shifts from writing to ethical promotion.
Nooooo, not marketing! I don't want that stuff. I've got stacks of marketing books I've never opened. Don't become one of those people now.
I won't because I can't. I'm neither a writer nor a marketer. Thankfully, I will never be. Yet four books came through me. And through the same place, downloads are going to flow in just as effortless.
We've talked many times about freeing your book. Now it's time to actually free it and put it out into the world. And get paid well for it, even if you don’t care about money.
This is about what happens after you publish. Or maybe, as we'll explore, what starts long before you even begin.
It's about letting the book be seen through you as its main effortless instrument.
You might think this only matters if you've already published something. But it's just as relevant if you're thinking about writing a book, since it affects every moment from now on. It might even affect whether you start writing at all!
You could replace "marketing your book" with promoting anything else, but I'm sticking with books to keep this as useful as possible for writers.
So why shift attention to this now?
After writing four books, I'm risking having more published books than actual downloads. Okay, that's a bit of an exaggeration, but you get the point. I kind of have to figure this out. And I love exploring it. It’s fully alive, at the moment.
This will be a shared exploration, just like the art-of-unwriting-series. By thinking it through while working it out, we're going to master this area without caring about mastering anything.
To make this more fun and tangible, I'm going to show you how I market my own books, focusing on 'The Art of Unwriting', which comes out soon. I'll share reminders that help me stay open to how the book wants to be spread, rather than getting stuck in boring or frustrating tactics.
Your book will find ways to be found, through you, naturally. Pretty cool, no?
Been reading WordSpill for a while? The Art of Unwriting is basically everything we've been exploring here, but more structured and clear. Send me a message if you soon want to read it for the symbolic amount of one euro.
I look forward to what's coming. I've decided for myself that marketing my book, The New Middle Way, which was published May 22 in Kindle and print editions, and June 30 on Audible, will be a two-year process, taking me to the age of 81. The idea--for me anyway--is to build a solid and steady base even if it lasts longer than I do.
Excited to see this transformation and learn along with you, Youri.
